About Mailing Lists

What is a Mailing List?
A mailing list is similar to an email address, except that when you send a message to a mail list, it is distributed to all subscribed members of that list.
CQU mail lists are managed through an automated program, Mailman, which is web integrated making it easy for users to manage their membership accounts.

Protocol
Students must adhere to all CQUnet Computing Regulations , in particular those relating to use of computing facilities and electronic mail.
Acceptable Protocol and Usage is to be observed at all times.

Course Mailing Lists
A course mailing list is a forum established for course discussions and interactive communications amongst students of that course.
Not all courses use mailing lists. Always check your Course Profile for formation on mailing lists.

IMPORTANT CHANGES TO COURSE MAILING LIST SUBSCRIPTIONS
Where a course mailing list exists, ALL enrolled students in that course will be automatically subscribed to the course list using their official university email address (ie studentnumber@student.cqu.edu.au).

List membership subscriptions are "refreshed" and updated daily. It is not recommended that students subscribe to the course mailing list using an alternative email address, if so, these will only be effective until the next daily refresh process. This change reflects the new CQU Student E-mail Policy.

What lists are available?
Visit Mailman at http://mailman.cqu.edu.au for a complete listing.

Anti-screen scraper - Accessing Mailman Off-Campus
STOP!  Important point to note
If attempting to access mailing lists from outside of the University (ie not using CQU dial-up/VPN or on-campus), to protect email addresses from being picked
up by spammers, portions of the Mailman interface have been password protected by a simple username and password.  This ensures it is an actual person
logging in and not an automated screen scraping program searching for addresses.

When the Anti-screen scraper dialog box appears, use Username: mailman  and  Password: mailman

Working With Lists

ListInfo
Each list has it's own ListInfo webpage. This page is the gateway to managing your list membership – view archives, subscribe, unsubscribe, get a password reminder, or change your membership configuration options.

Accessing the lists’ Listinfo webpage

Your lists' ListInfo webpage can be accessed in any of the following ways:

Posting (sending) to a List:
You must be subscribed to a mailing list before you can post (and receive) messages.
To post a message to the list, address your email message to listname@lists.cqu.edu.au (replacing listname with the actual list name) eg class-coit12140-t1@lists.cqu.edu.au

Subscribe to a List

1. From the lists’ ListInfo webpage, locate the Subscribing to listname section.

Enter your email address, name (optional) and pick a password. It is recommended that you pick a password at this time, however, if you do not enter a password one will be automatically generated for you for that particular mailing list subscription. You will need your password to change your subscription options.

2. Click Subscribe.

At this time, your subscription request will be held by the system, as it must first be confirmed by you via email. You will receive a confirmation email (should happen within 10 minutes).

3. Confirm email received. To confirm that you want to be added to this mailing list, simply reply to this message, making no changes and keeping the Subject: header intact.

4. The system will confirm your subscription and you will receive a “Welcome to” email message containing important information such as posting to the list, visiting your subscription page (to change your options, unsubscribe or get a password reminder), as well as your list subscription password itself. File this away for future reference.

Unsubscribe from a List

1. From the lists’ ListInfo webpage, locate the listname Subscribers section (towards the bottom of the page).

Where it indicates “To unsubscribe from listname, ….” section , enter your subscription email address and click on Unsubscribe or edit options. If you leave the field blank, you will be prompted for your email address.

2. Your Member Options webpage will be displayed. From the Unsubscribe section, click Unsubscribe.

By clicking on the Unsubscribe button, a confirmation message will be emailed to you. This message will have a link that you should click on to complete the removal process (you can also confirm by email; see the instructions in the confirmation message).

Finding your List Password

1. From the lists’ ListInfo webpage, locate the listname Subscribers section (towards the bottom of the page).

Where it indicates “To unsubscribe from listname , get a password reminder, ….” section, enter your subscription email address and click on Unsubscribe or edit options. If you leave the field blank, you will be prompted for your email address.

2. Your Member Options webpage will be displayed. From the Password reminder section, click Remind.

Your password will be emailed to your subscription email address.

All Mailman queries should be directed to mailman@lists.cqu.edu.au.
