There are two parts to Assignment 2:

Part A - Data design of the Rainforest Hideaway Tourist Accomodation System.

As part of the design for the Rainforest Hideaway Tourist Accommodation System (RHTAS) for which you created a logical model in assignment 1, you are required to create a data design for the RHTAS. You need to complete this part of the assignment using a data design template.

Requirements

As part of completing Part A of assignment 2 you will be required to:

  1. Create an ERD with cardinality notation.
    You should include attributes in your ERD.
  2. Create 3NF table designs for the system.
    The designs should be written using the standard notation format introduced in the textbook on page 407. For each of the tables identify the possible candidate keys, the primary key, a probable foreign key and potential secondary keys.
  3. Use sample data to populate the fields for three records.
Part B - Essay on System Development Methodologies

Essay Topic

Compare and contrast out-sourcing system development as opposed to carrying out system development in-house.

Requirements

For part B of assignment 2 you are required to write an academic essay comparing and contrasting out-sourcing system development as opposed to carrying out system development in-house.

Your research into this topic is to show depth and diversity. Your arguments must be supported by referring to reputable articles that are relevant to the main argument of your essay. The reference list should contain at least 6 sources fully referenced from textbooks, refereed journals and reputable websites. How many of each you use is entirely up to you, but you should note that articles found on general websites are NOT acceptable. For example, articles found on Wikipedia are NOT acceptable whereas articles found on IBM’s site are acceptable. The research you complete in preparation for writing this academic essay should show depth and diversity.

Presentation

Professional presentation, spell-checked, and correct grammar, using Harvard style referencing, page numbering, and headers and footers. You must use the Harvard style of referencing.

The Academic Essay

Your academic essay must be written using the academic essay template. The structure is:

  1. Introduction
  2. Body of the essay
  3. Conclusion
  4. References

The maximum word length is 2500 words (+/-10%) excluding references headers, footers, and Table of Contents. You should keep in mind the audience for whom the essay is intended and that is other systems analysts.

Using templates

You need to put your name and other details into the required fields of the template. Insert your own answers (in black font) into the template where the red font is currently shown. Please ensure that you delete the material in the red font. It is included in the template to assist you to understand what is required in each section. It should NOT form part of your asssignment when you submit it.
